After months and months of no pavement, fly tipping and mess, work is underway to complete the public highway around the bingo hall redevelopment at the end of Pearl Street.

The Agate Street site, in Splott, had been vacant since 2009 upon the closure of Riva Bingo and subsequent damage in 2015 after a fire onsite. It remained empty until Taff Housing acquired the site for development of new affordable homes and planning approval was received in 2021. Construction started in 2022, partly funded by Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant, to provide 39 one and two bedroom flats for 39 families.
Residents first moved in to the Taff Housing development in September 2024 (read more here), but an area to the west of the building was left with uneven surfaces, potholes etc., making it hazardous for pedestrians (and therefore cordoned off).

Today, a team of workers are busy preparing the surfaces for tarmac (unfortunately, we’re not getting the nice paving that’s to the front of the building (the rest of it is being tarmacked), but it’s a significant improvement on the current situation.
According to one of the gentlemen working on site, the tarmac should be down by tomorrow evening (Thursday 1st May).
