Happy 10th Birthday Keep Splott Tidy!

It’s hard to believe, but local litter-picking initiative, Keep Splott Tidy, is a decade old this month!

Established in August 2016 by residents who were keen to make a difference in their area, with help from Keep Wales Tidy and Keep Grangetown Tidy, the inaugural Keep Splott Tidy litter-pick took place in Moorland Park and drew over 30 volunteers.

To celebrate its 10th birthday, the team will return to Moorland Park for an evening pick on Thursday the 20th August from 6-8pm, followed by a few bring-your-own drinks.

All equipment is provided, including litter pickers, hoops, bags, high-viz vests and gloves. There are smaller pickers for children, who are always welcome on the litter-picks, as long as accompanied by an adult.

Keep Splott Tidy founding member, Louise, said:

“For 10 years, Keep Splott Tidy has been about far more than picking up litter. As well as our regular clean-ups, shared weekly bin updates, kept things going through Covid, organised pub quizzes and fundraisers, met with Cardiff Council Cabinet Members and waste teams to push for improvements, and even helped get the street cleaning day changed! We’ve organised beach cleans, involved local schools, and worked with groups across Cardiff to tackle litter together.

Everything we’ve achieved has been down to the amazing people who give up their time to help. A huge Diolch to everyone who’s helped out over the years, whether you’ve volunteered once or a 100 times. We’d love to see some new faces too, so come and join us as we start our next 10 years!”

The launch of Keep Splott Tidy, ten years ago, even made the news!

Core member of the team, Rob, said:

“For ten years, Keep Splott Tidy has shown what can happen when local people take pride in their community and work together. What started as a simple idea has become a lasting movement, making Splott cleaner, greener and stronger. I’m incredibly proud of everyone who has given their time, energy and enthusiasm over the past decade, and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together in the years ahead.”

And founder Peter is delighted that “10 years on and (KST) is still making your neighbourhood cleaner.”

The weather forecast for Thursday looks good, so why not pop along to Moorland Park, Swansea Street entrance, this Thursday evening and help Keep Splott Tidy celebrate ten years of terrific work?
