This week Inksplott is delighted to interview Justin Reggie Oliver about his performing arts academy:

Inksplott: Hi Justin, thank you for being interviewed for Inksplott.  Can you tell us a little about yourself and your business, Just One Theatre Arts?

Justin: JustOne Theatre Arts opened its doors to students in January 2015. We are already proving ourselves as one of the top Performing Arts Academy’s in Wales. We provide exceptional and affordable sessions in singing, acting and dance. Our Instructors consist of industry professionals and experienced I.S.T.D registered teachers committed to maintaining our 100% examination pass rate. We are invested in giving our students the very best experience possible and ensure each child gets the most from their time with us. Each student has the opportunity to take examinations in each of our core subjects and has ample opportunity to cement their knowledge by taking part in the many performance opportunities throughout the year.

Inksplott: How did you get into this?  Can you please tell us a little about the history of your business?

Justin: I started the performing arts academy because as a child I was made to choose between activities because of fees, so felt I wanted to create a performing arts academy which was accessible and covered all aspects of the performing arts, so you could take all classes in the same place.

JustOne Theatre Arts started as a small theatre school in Roath and we believed the students would benefit from more sessions in dance. We started our sessions initially in the Moorland Community Centre in Splott because of locality to the theatre school and there was an overwhelming response to our school and the teachers. There was a lack of affordable sessions in performing arts and we believe children were losing out by not being able to gain access to these subjects

A 2002 report by the arts education partnership revealed that children who were exposed to drama, music and dance were more proficient at reading writing and maths. Current funding allocation and lack of resources in schools are making it more difficult for children to access these important subjects. JustOne theatre arts is a performance academy for 218 year olds. We provide affordable weekly sessions in dance, singing and drama.

Inksplott: And how come the business is in Splott?

Justin: Splott was an obvious choice for us as I live in the area I have some knowledge of the local activities available and Splott did not have its very own performing arts academy.

Inksplott: What’s your speciality?

Justin: Inspiring confidence through performance.

Inksplott: What’s your best story since setting up the business?

Justin: The support from our parents has been unbelievable they all have supported and given their time developing JustOne Theatre Arts studios. The sense of community we have already created within the school is really rewarding.

Inksplott: Any exciting plans or events on the horizon?

Justin: Opening night is the Halloween party on Monday 31st October from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and tickets are available for £5.00 each.

This includes a thriller dance class, disco and loads of creepy dance games. We are also starting lots of new classes including cheerleading, acro, 50+ line dance and social dance, drama club not to mention our regular classes. All classes are £3.50.

Inksplott: That’s great – thank you so much for the interview!
