Put the 16th August in your diary – there’s a spectacular celebration coming to Splott!
What started in 2015 as a simple idea: offering breakfast to people in need, has grown into one of Cardiff’s most loved community charities.
Founded by Fred and Angela Bullard and Trisha Mardon, Splott Community Volunteers began with a grassroots fundraiser in Moorland Park to support their first breakfast clubs at The Old Library.
A decade on, the charity has become a lifeline for many in Splott and beyond. Today, it runs a weekly breakfast club serving 70 people, three social mornings each week with hot drinks and snacks, monthly tea parties for over-65s, meal kit distributions, and community lunches and picnics.
The charity also signposts people to external agencies who can help them with food, fuel and financial concerns and runs a volunteer-led worry club where residents can find a friendly ear and a helping hand.
This August, Splott Community Volunteers celebrates a decade of grassroots action and neighbourly kindness. To mark the occasion, the charity is hosting a special 10th anniversary open day for the whole community to enjoy.
On Saturday 16 August 2025 from 12-5pm, the STAR Centre will come alive with music, activities and food. There will be live performances from Sam Hickman, Francesa Dimech, Thoby Davis and Shirley Classey, plus a special appearance from Splott Nessa. Visitors can enjoy a bouncy castle, Fiery Jack’s Circus Cycle Session, and circus skills with No Fit State Circus. Children can also enjoy free facepainting and family-friendly games throughout the day.
Tasty treats will be on hand with candyfloss, ice cream, burgers, hotdogs and Caribbean food, while market stalls will offer handmade goods and unique finds. There will also be plenty of chances to win prizes with a super raffle, lucky dip and tombola.
