Splott Councillor elected as Lord Mayor of Cardiff

Jane Henshaw has been a Councillor for the Splott ward since 2017 and was elected on the 23rd of May as the Lord Mayor of Cardiff and Chair of Cardiff Council for the next Municipal Year.

Councillor Henshaw was presented with the official chain of office at a ceremony in County Hall, during Cardiff Council’s annual general meeting.

Formerly the Deputy Lord Mayor to Cllr Bablin Molik, Cllr Henshaw has chosen Cardiff Food Bank as her nominated charity, a cause close to her heart.

“Through my work on the Council, I have seen at first hand the great work the staff and the volunteers at the charity do, how they are changing lives in these difficult times and helping people out of poverty. It is a sad fact of life today that they exist at all, of course, but I am determined to help Cardiff Food Bank in any way I can this year.”

The CEO of Cardiff Food Bank, Rachel Biggs, attended the Mayor-making ceremony and spoke to the Council about her work.

In 2017, in the run-up to the local councillor elections, I interviewed Ms Henshaw – read what she had to say here.

Cllr Henshaw, who now has the title The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of Cardiff and has become the 119th Lord Mayor of Cardiff, was first elected to the Council in 2017 and represents the Splott ward. She has a BA degree in English and History.

Originally from Wrexham, she moved to Cardiff in 2014 and is the mother of four children. She also has four grandchildren. Her daughter, Angharad Anderson, will support her as the Lady Mayoress.

Cllr Helen Lloyd Jones, who represents Radyr and Morganstown, was elected as Deputy Lord Mayor.

Leader of the Council (and fellow Splott Councillor) Huw Thomas tweeted:

Wonderful moment for Edward Stubbs and I to see our ward colleague in Splott, Ms Jane Henshaw, elected tonight to be Lord Mayor of Cardiff and Chair of Cardiff Council for the next Municipal Year. Llongyfarchiadau a phob lwc* Jane (and Annie, Lord Mayor’s Consort).

*Llongyfarchiadau a phob lwc translates as ‘congratulations and the best of luck’

Cllr Henshaw takes over as Lord Mayor from Cllr Bablin Molik.
