What’s on in Splott this October

The leaves are turning, the nights are drawing in and little humans get ready for an evening of trick or treat…that’s right folks, October is upon us!

As usual, there’s plenty going on in our part of Cardiff this happy halloween month. Here’s a handy list of events and activities in Splott and surrounding areas…

Thursday 3rd October – Death Cafe

This week at #RailwayGardens: Join locals Jayne and Clare this Thursday 3rd October for open conversations about death. Gain new perspectives on a topic that is often considered taboo. All are welcome.

Friday 4th October – Cuppa with a Councillor

Local Councillor, Ed Stubbs, will be meeting community members at the STAR Centre in the Splott Community Volunteers’ facility to chat about queries and concerns. There will be tea, and most probably cake!

Saturday 5th October – tour around the Trinity Centre

Wednesday 9th October – Tremorfa Nursery Open Day

Tremorfa Nursery School has moved into a building on the old Willows high School site at the end of Willows Avenue in Tremorfa and is inviting residents to drop in on the 9th October between 1.3-2.30pm or between 4pm-5pm to have a look around.

Friday 25th October – Tales of Terror at Railway Gardens

On Friday 25th October Good Shed and Peculiar Productions are teaming up for an exciting night of open air theatre and classic horror in the heart of Splott.

The new cafe, Seal & Bear, will be open for food and hot drinks before and after the performance and there will be a raffle. There will be two performances, each 25 mins, and an interval performance by Oasis one world choir.

Saturday 26th October – Bus Trip to Brecon

Splott Community Volunteers has organised a community coach trip to Brecon on the day of the antiques and vintage fair. There are a few seats left (£6 per person). Email info@splottcommunityvolunteers.co.uk for more information and to book.

Sunday 27th October – Keep Splott Tidy Spooktacular Litter Pick

The Wombles of Splott will be taking on Splott Park for their annual fancy dress litter pick. Dress up as Dracula, or go as a ghost (or just pop on a silly hat or boppers!) and join in from 10am to 12noon to make a difference. All equipment is provided.

Tuesday 29th October – Toast and Jam Tuesday

Join Splott Community Volunteers during half term for some free tea and toast in their cwtchy corner. The play area will be open for the little ones.

Wednesday 30th October – Halloween Party at Boomerang

Thursday 31st October – Halloween Breakfast Club

On the morning of Halloween, Splott Community Volunteers will be holding a special spooky version of their community breakfast club and will be providing prizes to children who come in fancy dress.

Throughout October – Railway Gardens

There’s plenty going on at Railway Gardens this month (find them at the top of Adeline Street, next to the Railway (funny that!))

Weekly activities

Let’s have a gander at the regular list of things going on…

Mondays

What’s on your mind, Splott? Are things getting you down? Concerned about rising costs? Having a tough time, or worried about friends or family? Splott Community Volunteers has an open drop-in session called the Monday Worry Club where you can pop in for a cuppa and a chat and maybe find some help or sign-posting to those who can lend a helping hand.

Tuesdays

Every Tuesday morning in term time, a community group at St Philip’s Church on Tweedsmuir Road in Tremorfa provides free coffee and cake and the chance to chat.

There is a free community lunch and warm space just over the bridge in Adamsdown every Tuesday at No Fit State Circus.

Welsh learners’ practice group at Railway Gardens on Tuesday afternoons!

At 1.30 on Tuesdays at Railway Gardens there’s Baby & Parent Support Group for free. Pop along and meet other parents and other babies! Find them at the top of Adeline Street off Railway Street.

Do you have a handy skill to share? Pop along to the GoodShed at Railway Gardens between 2pm and 4pm to build stuff and drink tea!

Wednesdays

Join Splott Community Volunteers for Knit and Natter between 10am and 12 noon for a cuppa and a cake and learn some new knitting skills while having a chat. Refreshments provided for free. Also, once a month, there will be a mobile wool and embroidery shop, Wool on Wheels, joining them.

Forces of Nature after school nature club for children runs at Railway Gardens from 3.15pm to 4.30pm. Find out more here. No need to book though -just pop along (and there’s a free snack for kids).

Splo-Down, a food cooperative operating from a container at the back of the old STAR Leisure Centre on Splott Road offer great quality and value for money bags of fresh veg for affordable prices between 5pm and 7pm. Pay what you can. More information here.

You can also pop along to Railway Gardens for Natter with Neighbours at 10.30am.

Thursdays

For £4 at the Splott Community Volunteers’ Breakfast Club you can get a hot cooked breakfast and a bag of 10 items from their food pantry, including a fridge item, freezer item and tinned goods, fried goods and fresh fruit & veg. Find them at the back of the old STAR Leisure Centre on Splott Road, entry opposite A1 Tyres on Railway Street.

There are two cool activities at Railway Gardens on a Thursday morning: Tai Chi at 10am and Creative Writing at 10.30am. Find out more here.

Fridays

Digital skills at Splott Community Volunteers runs from 10am to 12 noon and is open to all, regardless of abilities. Come in for a cuppa and a cake and get help from the Cardiff Council digital skills team.
