Who will be Splott’s new councillor?

This Thursday, 9th July, five candidates will stand in a by-election to vote in a new councillor for Splott.

The by-election was triggered by former councillor, Huw Thomas, being elected as one of the six Members of the Senedd for Caerdydd Penarth back in May.

This meant that Huw, who was also Leader of the Council, had to stand down from both roles to take up his new job as MS (Member of the Senedd), paving the way for a by-election.

There are five candidates/parties standing for election on Thursday:

Charles Agbakahi – Ceidwadwyr Cymreig / Welsh Conservatives
James Caruana – Welsh Labour / Llafur Cymru
David John Cook – Reform UK Wales
Rhys William Husband – Welsh Liberal Democrats / Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol Cymru
Simran Patel – Green Party / Plaid Werdd

Perhaps surprisingly, after their successful Senedd election campaign, Plaid Cymru isn’t standing in this election. But then they did win three Senedd seats back in May (image courtesy of vote.wales):

In the 2024 Splott by-election, Labour ranked first with the Green Party coming in second. Here are the full results, courtesy of the Cardiff ModernGov website:
