Autumn plant giveaway for Splott, Adamsdown and Tremorfa residents

Local organisation Green Squirrel has teamed up with Bute Park plant nursery for an autumn plant giveaway as part of the city-wide Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival.

On Saturday 17th of October, between 10.30am and 12.30pm, they will be distributing free autumn and winter veg plants and helping you to keep growing your own throughout the colder season.

Green Squirrel will be distributing plants to Splott, Tremorfa and Adamsdown residents from their new site, Railway Gardens and are super excited to welcome you on to the site before works begin. It’s a great opportunity to take a peek at the community land alongside the railway and ask questions about the exciting project.

Booking is essential, so please head here to secure your space: https://green-city-events.eventcube.io/events/26453/autumn-plant-giveaway

In order to keep everyone safe, Green Squirrel requires everyone over the age of 11 years to wear a facemask (unless exempt) and asks that you maintain social distance of 2 metres from anyone outside your household. You will receive further information about our safety measures in an email prior to the event.

If you cannot leave the house or collect, you can book a delivery slot via the ticket link and the team will deliver your plants directly to your door (Splott, Adamsdown and Tremorfa only) with the help of volunteers from the local mutual aid group.

Please note the above applies to Splott, Adamsdown and Tremorfa residents only and numbers are limited. If you live in another area of Cardiff please scroll down to find out who to contact about collecting plants.

You will be able to choose from a selection of the following plants:

Cabbage / Spring onions / Spinach / Tatsoi / Kale / Mustard / Lettuce / mixed herbs

These are all hardy plants that have be chosen to grow well over the colder months and extend your harvest.

Some of the plants come in trays of nine so maybe you would like to share and swap with your neighbours. Due to demand this will be first come first served and plants will go fast.

Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival

This event is part of the city-wide Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival which is expecting to involve more than 1,200 people in growing, cooking and community sharing events throughout the city. The Festival runs from 12 September to World Food Day on 16 October.

The Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival builds on the success of the summer’s Cardiff Growing Together programme which saw more than 14,000 plants, seeds and growing kits distributed to over 3,000 households.

The festival will also be an opportunity to celebrate all of the fantastic work that community groups have done to keep the city fed and to bring people together through lockdown.

Green Squirrel is happy to be working with local organisations through the Edible Cardiff network to distribute plants across different areas of Cardiff so please get in touch with the group in your area if you would like some plants. Please be aware that these groups are taking part on a voluntary basis and may not have the capacity to distribute plants to all those that request them.
